Death to the JuiceI know the picture is not an exact case of horrific spelling errors in English in Israel, but it does make the point. I’m sure you have all seen grammar errors when translating Hebrew to English and to tell you the truth there is no real reason for it. There are plenty of native English speakers in Israel that you can call before pushing the print button. Put down your pride a bit and let an American help you!

Well one way to fight this epidemic is by hiring native English speakers to teach English in Israeli schools. Something that the goverment of Israel is now making a push to do.  This is a good thing. So if you have the patience to teach English and need a good job, now is the time. You can read all about the opportunity in this article.

In part it says:

Every few years Israel tries unsuccessfully to lure Diaspora Jews into making aliyah and becoming English teachers in its schools. Now, they are trying again with a new angle – the economic woes in the United States.

“There is always a shortage of English teachers and you have to ask, where are you going to find new ones?” Dr. Judy Steiner, Chief Inspector for English Language Education in Israel told Haaretz.

Given the current financial problems in the United States, the Ministry of Education and the Jewish Agency hope to find more Anglos willing to consider an exciting future in teaching English to Israeli youth.

And it seems that the program “English Teachers for Israel” has succeeded before it has really begun. Several dozen people from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have already been accepted after answering advertisements in their local aliyah centers.

I am a big fan of people coming together to help others in times of need. The job market in Israel has been devestating in Israel and I would venture to say has had a bigger effect on Anglos.

Reason being that the Anglo lifestyle is usually higher as well as most of the jobs being cut are in the high-tech field which was hit the hardest in Israel and where a majority of Anglos are employed. Also noted is IDT having shut down their call center has left hundreds of Anglos without jobs.

But the good people of Bet Shemesh are not going to sit back and wait for something to happen. They are banding together and creating work shops, lectures and other ways to help Anglos in Israel earn a living.

Below is text from emails sent to the Bet Shemesh Email list that will provide more details.

The Beit Shemesh Business Forum has been formed to help unemployed Anglos deal with the procedural, financial and social aspects of unemployment in Israel. The Forum’s goals are to provide as much assistance and information as possible as people navigate the system.

The Beit Shemesh Business Forum is looking for people and businesses who can help unemployed persons.

Here’s a number of ways:
1)     The Forum is putting together a list of professionals who can help in
different spheres- whether they be law, finances, vocational, social and
more. If you would like to be put on this list, please E-Mail bsbizforum@gmail.com

Please note that we ask that you offer services either for free or at a
discounted rate

2)     The Forum is looking for people willing to write articles and posts
for the blog- http://bsbizforum.blogspot.com

3)     The Forum is putting together a Small Business Forum comprised of
professionals in marketing, law, accounting, sales and more. The goal is for
this forum to meet once or twice a year and evaluate business plans
submitted to the group by people looking to start a business. This forum is
completely voluntary and is meant to save prospective small business owners thousands of shekels. If you would like to offer your time, please E-Mail bsbizforum@gmail.com.

The Beit Shemesh Business Forum announces 5 seminars aimed at helping
unemployed Anglos in Beit Shemesh.

failed entrepreneur Failure is an Option! To be a successful entrepreneur you must failReal entrepreneurs are not afraid not fail. Not only are they not afraid to fail, but they don’t look at a failed business as a failure but as an experience to learn from and to make their next start-up a success.

The first thing we need to do is define the word “fail”. What do we mean by fail or success? Is success the fact that you can pay your bills from your business or is success when you have an exit? The same for “fail”. What does it mean to fail? If you struggled for a year to get a business of the ground and during that time your business paid your bills for you then did you fail? What if you sold it for a small amount because it was not bringing you the success you hoped for? Is that failing? Or is failing simply when you need to shut down your company because it is not paying the bills and you could not sell it to someone else? Obviously there is no simple answer.

It is very rare that an entrepreneur is successful with his first venture. Often it can take a few failures before he finds his success.

A lot of entrepreneurs failed or never finished college. They couldn’t be tied down to a strict regement or program. They needed to get out, break out of the system and learn what they need to know on their own.

Experience is the greatest education.

I often wonder why young entrepreneurs go to college. With the money they spend on a 4 year college degree they could have invested in a real world business and be four years ahead of the system. Even if after four years the young entrepreneur fails, his education of starting and running a business, even a couple of businesses can be a greater education then what he could have gotten in college.

There is no embarrassment in failing, there is only embarassment in not getting up and giving up on your dream. Entrepreneurs are dream driven not business driven. If one business fails they will start another one and continue their dream of living life on their terms  and becoming a successful entrepreneur.

This post was inspired by a post on Feld.com. Brad Feld is a very successful entreprneur and investor. He asks:

What makes a better CEO of a new startup – an experienced entrepreneur who’s last company was a failure or a big company executive with a stellar pedigree who has never worked in a startup?

His answer?

Give me the experienced entrepreneur whose last company was a failure 100% of the time.

You should read the rest of this excellent post and most investors will feel the same way. I’m 36 years old now and I am proud to say that I “failed” many times and in many different ways and for many different reasons. Like the time I launched a new website on September 11th 2001 with Newspaper ads that I spent a lot of money on coming out on September 12th. I wonder why the ads didn’t work? But I never considered myself to having failed. As long as I learned something along the way and used my knew knowledge for my next business then I do not consider having failed, but consider it having been a learning process.

My first start-up when I moved to Israel I spent 3 1/2 years putting in blood sweat and tears and it eventually failed, but I can not even begin to explain to you how much I learned from the mistakes that were made that have saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars in the success of my current company. It was a tremendous education that you simply can not get in any University. I didn’t fail because the next day I got up and starting planning my next company which now has 9 employees and is on it’s way to B’Ezras Hashem tremendous success. In fact, looking back, I never really failed at all.

Oh, and by the way, when you do succeed, no one remembers that you failed in the past.

fastcompany 236x300 Reading magazines as an educationI have been reading business magazines for almost 20 years and I must say that I always learn something new. Sometimes it can be a great marketing idea, sometimes it can be an inspiring story and other times it could just be a review of a website that I end up visiting and doing business with. Whenever I go the the States or when one of my partners, friends or family goes to the States I always bring or have brought to me a stack full of my favorite business magazines.

Now I’m not going to go into my personal educational history (although I have some
great stories about that as well), because whether you never graduated High-School (Ahemmm…) or you have an MBA, reading the latest business magazines or magazines pertaining to your industry always gives you insights and inspiration as well as the latest developments that can effect your business.

incmagazine 220x300 Reading magazines as an educationSome of the magazines I have been reading for years include Entrepreneur, Inc. & Fast Company. Each one is worth reading each month for any entrepreneur, but for almost every industry or specialty business there is a magazine geared for you.

Reading books and blogs offer similar experiences, but we will talk about them in future posts.
