failed entrepreneur Failure is an Option! To be a successful entrepreneur you must failReal entrepreneurs are not afraid not fail. Not only are they not afraid to fail, but they don’t look at a failed business as a failure but as an experience to learn from and to make their next start-up a success.

The first thing we need to do is define the word “fail”. What do we mean by fail or success? Is success the fact that you can pay your bills from your business or is success when you have an exit? The same for “fail”. What does it mean to fail? If you struggled for a year to get a business of the ground and during that time your business paid your bills for you then did you fail? What if you sold it for a small amount because it was not bringing you the success you hoped for? Is that failing? Or is failing simply when you need to shut down your company because it is not paying the bills and you could not sell it to someone else? Obviously there is no simple answer.

It is very rare that an entrepreneur is successful with his first venture. Often it can take a few failures before he finds his success.

A lot of entrepreneurs failed or never finished college. They couldn’t be tied down to a strict regement or program. They needed to get out, break out of the system and learn what they need to know on their own.

Experience is the greatest education.

I often wonder why young entrepreneurs go to college. With the money they spend on a 4 year college degree they could have invested in a real world business and be four years ahead of the system. Even if after four years the young entrepreneur fails, his education of starting and running a business, even a couple of businesses can be a greater education then what he could have gotten in college.

There is no embarrassment in failing, there is only embarassment in not getting up and giving up on your dream. Entrepreneurs are dream driven not business driven. If one business fails they will start another one and continue their dream of living life on their terms  and becoming a successful entrepreneur.

This post was inspired by a post on Feld.com. Brad Feld is a very successful entreprneur and investor. He asks:

What makes a better CEO of a new startup – an experienced entrepreneur who’s last company was a failure or a big company executive with a stellar pedigree who has never worked in a startup?

His answer?

Give me the experienced entrepreneur whose last company was a failure 100% of the time.

You should read the rest of this excellent post and most investors will feel the same way. I’m 36 years old now and I am proud to say that I “failed” many times and in many different ways and for many different reasons. Like the time I launched a new website on September 11th 2001 with Newspaper ads that I spent a lot of money on coming out on September 12th. I wonder why the ads didn’t work? But I never considered myself to having failed. As long as I learned something along the way and used my knew knowledge for my next business then I do not consider having failed, but consider it having been a learning process.

My first start-up when I moved to Israel I spent 3 1/2 years putting in blood sweat and tears and it eventually failed, but I can not even begin to explain to you how much I learned from the mistakes that were made that have saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars in the success of my current company. It was a tremendous education that you simply can not get in any University. I didn’t fail because the next day I got up and starting planning my next company which now has 9 employees and is on it’s way to B’Ezras Hashem tremendous success. In fact, looking back, I never really failed at all.

Oh, and by the way, when you do succeed, no one remembers that you failed in the past.

israel 61 300x300 The State of Israel on its 61st Birthday, one of the greatest start up success stories of all time

Israel 61

Start-ups come in all shapes and sizes. Most are for profit companies trying to make a living while others are non-profit start-ups trying to make the world a better place.

Then there is something just a wee bit larger and probably more difficult and that is starting up an actual country or state. That is no easy task for anyone.

I just watched a powerful DVD put out by Rabbi Berel Wein’s Jewish Destiny organization as part of their Faith & Fate series. This one was called “The Miracle of Israel” focusing on the years 1945-1948.

It just under two hours this amazing presentation showed the Jewish People from right after the Holocaust to the founding of the State of Israel. They did a remarkable job of showing how much the odds were against the State to even get started and once they did get started to even survive their first year of existence. The world and the odds were against them from the beginning.

Imagine enduring the holocaust and then having no where else to go. No one wants you and the British will only let 1500 Jews a month get into “Palestine”. Then the world finally feels guilty enough to allow the Jews to have their own home land and for the first time in almost 2000 years the Jews finally come home. They are week and exhausted and the land was not exactly the metroplois that it is today to say the least. Yet the Start-up Founders of the State of Israel relaised that they had no place else to go and so had no choice but to succeed.

61 years later we can look back at this start-up with tremendous pride. There are books written and the amazing success in almost every area of Israeli life and this post is not about all the achievements that are well known and documneted elsewhere. But since this is a magazine about being an entrepreneur in Israel, we should look at the two biggest factors that made Israel such a success; and if you can apply these two things to your start-up then for sure you will succeed.

1. Backs against the wall – as mentioned above there was no where else to go and their lives were literraly on the line. Is that how you feel about your start-up?

2. A Promise from G-D and daily miracles – This is probably the best way to success, if you can get the Creator of the world to promise you that you will succeed and if G-D will perform the crazy amount of miracles that has been shown to Israel every day since it’s inception, then you too will succeed with your start-up.

Happy Birthday Israel, lets hope we can finally get out of beta.

I love to see Israeli Entrepreneurs launch new sites and products. Below you will read about a new handbook that has just been released by Hillel Porath and Dovid Mark that will help you with your website marketing skills.

What is our new book all about? Why did we create it? What ‘need’ is it coming to answer in the marketplace?

We have been working in marketing for several years and it has been interesting to see that over the past few months more and more clients are interested in being in control of the marketing. Many clients are asking for the first push and then they want to grab the wheel.

Today more and more people have a better understanding of social media, SEO and online marketing then they had a year ago. In addition to that – new and old – website owners today are very aware of the fact that marketing online can be done almost on a zero budget.

Yet so many internet hopefuls are paralyzed with the question: “how do I reach the masses? Where do I start from?

This is why we created our book. The Super Website Marketing Handbook puts everything in place. It is the complete guide on How to market your website, How to create multiple streams of traffic to your site, How and where to market your information on the web, How to – social media marketing and search engine optimization.

One thing is very clear: You Need Traffic. The more traffic that comes to your website the more people will see your ideas and buy your products. A great website might be nice, but without solid traffic that keeps growing, your ideas and products will never move beyond your website.

The ideas, advice and resources in this book can help you turn your website into a successful online business. Of course this involves hard work and diligence, but the information found with in this book’s pages will be the difference between a nice idea and a web business that can generate for you a real source of income.
Follow this link to purchase & download the Super Website Marketing Handbook!

Now I don’t know about you, but when I see that header I’m thinking “Wow, that’s an amazing price, with tax and fuel how much can that be all together? $575.00?”

Then I open the email and see this:

We are pleased to inform you that El-Al has released very few seats for spring travel New York to Tel Aviv, for $499 plus tax and fees for a total of $794. The offer is only available for departure on certain flights between April 28th and May 23rd 2009. Maximum stay is 21 days.

Tickets must be issued by April 22nd.

Come on! $794.00? That’s an ok price, but I have seen cheaper with less restrictions. It is almost $300.00 more then the header in the email!

To me this is just wrong. You made me think it was an unbelievable deal and then you pull the rug out from under me. This is a Fail advertisement and I would not do business with them.

shlissel challah1 263x300 Segula for Parnossa: This Shabbos is Shlissel Challah Shabbos! Get your keys ready! There is a well known segulah (charm) for parnosa (making a living) that takes place this Shabbos. The Shabbos following the last day of Pesach it has become a minhag to bake Challahs either in the shape of a key or to actually insert your key into the Challah before baking (make sure to wrap it in tinfoil first). It is called Shlissel Challah. Hey, in todays economy it certainly can’t hurt. I believe the object to be that we recognize that parnossa comes from Hashem and we rely on him for our well being. Since Pesach is the start of the Spring time, it is now the times that crops should be ready after the winter. We have been doing it almost every year since we are married and I look forward to my wifes fresh Shlissel Chalah on Shabbos.
